Understanding Others is a skill

Freedom Writers is a great film, it is about the life and hardwork of a teacher named Erin in order to unite the students of her class. She sacrifice many to achieve her goal, yet what she did pays off in the end. Her students, who were formerly divided by the sense of race, could stand together.

There are many valuable lesson that I can learn from the movie "Freedom Writers" which are:

  1. Don't be judgemental: we always have this judgemental trait for almost everything we see or feel. We often judge someone from their look, their habit, and their way of doing things without even consider the backstory of them. We must acknowledge that we know a little about what other people came through. Being judgemental is a bad thing, it clouds our perception and often fail us to see what is true.
  2. Hardwork will payoff: I believe in the lesson that the hardwork will come into fruition someday. Hardworking like Erin in the movie. She works hard to change her students and she works hard to earn some money for them. She even divorced because of her jobs. In the end, after her devotion to the students, they do change. The students that are "zero", brutal, and racist change because of her.
  3. Listening is a skill which not everybody familiar with. I strongly believe that not everything is as it seems. Everyone and, perhaps, everything has a backstory. Imagine if Erin spares no time listening and understanding her students, will she becomes a great teacher? I believe not. She most likely will be like another teacher who see the students as troublemakers. In the movie, to teach her students about the pain of war and violence, Erin brings war-survivors to the students to share their stories. What the students get after that? Understanding. Yes, an understanding that war is evil, that unity is better than a meaningless war. What if the students spare no time listening to the testimonies? They perhaps ended as gangsters all the time. Therefore, I dare to say, listening is a skill we must possess to understand people, to understand many things, and to understand everything as a whole.
  4. Teamwork is necessary to speedup necessary changes: it is a shame that in the movie, Erin gets no support from her superior and coworkers. In fact, if they are supportive, I believe, the students can be changed faster. If they show teamwork, it must be easier for Erin to achieve her goal. Therefore, having a solid teamwork is necessary if we want to change everything fast and effective.
